Geochemical Survey Database of Hungary

The mission of the project is to assess the geochemical state of the near-surface environment of Hungary through the revision and interpretation of archive data and the implementation of new geochemical survey programs.

Developing a geochemical baseline database through systematic sampling and chemical analysis is a key area of applied geochemistry, with which we will be able to document the concentration and distribution of chemical elements in the Earth's near-surface environment. With this object, following international trends, a broad-scale geochemical mapping program was initiated in the one-time Geological Institute of Hungary in the beginning of the 1990s, in the frame of which many low-to-high density mapping projects were carried out, including the small-scale National Survey, the regional geochemical survey of mountains, and different local programs. Along with other European countries, we participated in the international FOREGS and GEMAS projects.

Though large amount of data was collected by these projects, they do not always meet the standards required for data harmonisation. Moreover, mapping of hilly lands and lowlands at a sufficient scale has not yet been achieved. Taking into account the original intentions, we decided to revive the geochemical mapping program of Hungary.

The project aims to revise and clarify the methods of the geochemical mapping programs through the collection and interpretation of archive data and the implementation of new model area surveys.

All the data produced in the geochemical mapping program has been now archived in the Geochemical Survey Database. The compilation of the database was urgently needed so as to be able to continue the mapping program. A simplified version of the database was published online in the beginning of 2018. https://map.mbfsz.gov.hu/geokemiai_terkepezes/

Model areas surveys are still in progress.
