GeoERA

GeoERA is a H2020 ERA-NET that started in January 2017 to establish the European Geological Surveys Research Area, advocating the free movement of researchers, knowledge and technology and align national geoscientific research agendas.

The European Union is facing a number of challenges that are firmly linked to subsurface resources.  On the one hand, there is a need to stimulate economic growth and the use of resources is central to this, and on the other hand, there is a need to support a healthy and secure environment for all citizens. Moreover, the growing population and the demographic change add to the pressure of the land utilisation on surface and on subsurface. Altogether, this increasingly puts pressure on the availability and use of natural resources, including geo-energy, raw materials and groundwater.
To address these subsurface challenges in a collaborative transnational way the GeoERA project  was initiated by EuroGeoSurveys (EGS). Within GeoERA 48 national and regional Geological Survey Organisations from 33 European countries joined forces and will carry out 15 transnational research projects.
This 30M EUR program will deliver a geological knowledge base, existing of objective, interoperable, harmonized and seamless data, information and expertise to service European, national and regional policy makers, industry and other stakeholders and support them in policy and decision making processes. All results will be published on the European Geological Data Infrastructure (EGDI).

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 731166.

The transnational projects are clustered into 4 main themes: Geo-energy, Groundwater, Raw materials  and Information Platform.
The Mining and Geological Survey of Hungary is participating in the following projects:

The GeoConnect³d project develops a new approach to disclose geological information for policy support and subsurface management. It starts from two regional case studies – the Roer-to-Rhine region and the Pannonian Basin – that form the input for evaluating potentially interacting subsurface activities. Valorisation at pan-European level is ensured by applying the methods in two pilot areas in Germany and Ireland.

Budget: 1,314,910.41 € from partners, 542,842.66 € from EU
Lead partner: GSB-RBINS of Belgium, coordinating 20 partners

The project address groundwater management issues related to drinking water, human and ecosystem health across Europe in relation to both geogenic elements and anthropogenic pollutants.

Budget: 2 108 869 € from partners, 890 945 € from EU
Lead partner: BRGM of France, coordinating 33 partners

RESOURCE will demonstrate the potentials of the harmonization of information about Europe’s groundwater resources through cross-border demonstrations projects, through harmonized characterization approaches for Karst and Chalk aquifers and through a first information product at Pan-European scale where available data is compiled and integrated to produce a map of the fresh groundwater resources of Europe.

Budget: 1,733,355 € from partners, 732,299 € from EU.
Lead partner: TNO of The Netherlands, coordinating  32 partners

Gál, Nóra

Climate change impact assessments often ignores the crucial role groundwater plays in the freshwater cycle. Utilising geological data and knowledge from EU geological surveys, TACTIC will improve climate change impact assessments and adaptation, and develop an infrastructure for harmonisation of data, methods and results.

Budget: 1,265,385€ from partners, 534,594€ from EU
Lead partner: GEUS of Denmark coordinating 20 partners

Hungarian project contact:
Kovács, Attila

This project will investigate the relationship between industrial activity (including geothermal energy, unconventional oil and gas exploitation, sub-surface storage and disposal of wastes) in the deep subsurface, and shallow groundwater resources at four pilot sites across Europe. It will use this evidence to develop an approach to evaluating groundwater vulnerability and to improve awareness of these issues with decision makers and the public to aid better sub-surface spatial planning and policy development.

Budget: 304,949 € from partners, 128,833 € from EU

Europe shows a growing consumption of critical and strategic raw materials that underpin the modern economy. FRAME is designed to research the critical and strategic raw materials in Europe by employing sound strategies and a geographically wide partner base with those that have some of these raw materials.

The aim is to improve the European Knowledge Base on raw materials by updating the electronic Minerals Yearbook produced in the Minerals4EU project and to extend the spatial coverage and quality of data currently in the Minerals Inventory.

Budget: 2,009,989 € from partners, 849,170 € from EU
